You’re Fabulous as You Are by Sophie Beer (Little Tiger, 2024)
Sophie Beer’s beautiful picture books are crammed full of colourful and cheerful illustrations of everyday life. The latest edition to her series of board books is this great title which celebrates children’s individuality. It shows us that fabulous can come in many different forms. All your little ones will be able to see themselves somewhere in this lovely book.
Mama Car by Lucy Catchpole and illustrated by Karen George (Faber & Faber, 2024)
Mama Car is Mum’s wheelchair. It is a place to play, snuggle and explore. Our narrator is ‘unreasonably, irrationally proud of (her) parents’ and when you read this book you can see that love shine through. Lucy Catchpole. along with her husband James, has led the way in creating inclusive and authentic books that tell great stories about children’s lives. The Boy Who Loves to Lick the Wind by Fiona Carswell and illustrated by Yu Rong (Otter-Barry Books, 2024)
This is a beautifully illustrated, honest and sensitive story about friendship through the eyes of two children brought together by the great outdoors. It clarifies the importance of connection and demonstrates that communication is much more than words. The characters’ curiosity and wonder in nature invite us to be playful and see the world in new ways. This book explores autism in an open and empathetic way that embraces and celebrates difference.
