A Knight to remember
We invited publisher Knights Of to write a blog for Everybody read! Here’s what they told us.
Knights Of is a multi-award-winning inclusive publisher, focused on bringing under-represented voices to the forefront of commercial children’s publishing. From illustrated young fiction to Young Adult, we publish entertaining and imaginative fiction for ages five to 15. We are recognised for nurturing incredibly diverse talent and bringing debut talent to chart-topping positions. Our award-winning titles include High Rise Mystery, A Kind of Spark and Happy Here.
Founded in 2017, we set out to address the lack of representation for diverse voices in children’s books. We know that seeing yourself in the pages of the books you read from a young age is vital. The publishing industry is historically white, middle-class, and inaccessible to marginalised communities. We are changing that. From hiring diversely at all levels to seeking out those often-overlooked voices, we have shown that inclusive publishing is not only necessary but also welcome – and can be a commercial success. From winning the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, the Blue Peter Award and the Carnegie Medal (the list goes on), to seeing the in-person effect of authors and illustrators meeting their young readers, we know that there is value in what we do. And we are here to stay.
We recently won the 2022 ‘Children’s Publisher of the Year’ title at the British Book Awards, a prestigious accomplishment that recognises the immense strives towards equality and diversity that our publications have enabled in the publishing industry.
We are exceptionally proud of all the titles that we have published. For teachers looking for a range of exciting titles to spice up their classroom bookshelves, we guarantee that any one of our titles would make a fantastic pick. Pursue new passions with Mia in the two newest installations of the Kelly Yang ‘Front Desk’ series, take a risk and overcome great danger in the short but enrapturing Peak Peril or explore a new world in the exciting, action-packed Zo and the Forest of Secrets.
For our older readers, we offer the opportunity for reflection and unparalleled insight into the lives of teen black girls through Girlhood Unfiltered or escapism in the magical Like a Charm. Equally captivating reads can be found in both The Dastardly Duo and Clean Getaway.
